AIMS
Here at Askam Village School, we strongly believe and support the view that all children have the following rights;
they are entitled to an appropriate differentiated curriculum
children with identified needs should have access to appropriate school support programmes.
We aim to work together with parents, and other professionals, as appropriate, to ensure that all children, regardless of ability or disability, are offered a full and rich curriculum to help them reach their full potential.
SCHOOL PRACTICE
The term special educational needs refers to children who have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn or access education than most children of the same age. They may experience difficulties in reading, writing, maths, expressing themselves, understanding information, making friends, behaving or have a sensory or physical disability. Many children will have SEN at some stage of their education. Here at Askam Village School children may be placed on a register for varying periods of time and some children appear on the register intermittently.
Ability varies between children and within subjects. There will be children whose attainment is always going to be below the average. These children need to be supported to make sure that they feel successful and valued. It is vital that their attainment is closely monitored to ensure that progress is evident and continues.
Class teachers monitor every child’s progress and plan work accordingly. If they have concerns about certain aspects they will ask parents to come into school to discuss the particular areas of difficulty. Sometimes this may mean that Mrs Newton, the Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator (SENDCo), will be asked to become involved. Their progress will be closely monitored by both the class teacher and Mrs Newton. If it is felt that the child’s needs require input from other professional bodies this will be arranged. Parents will be closely involved in all stages of the process. Long term disabilities will be considered for an Educational Health Care Plan.
PARENTS
If you feel that your child is struggling with aspects of school life which have not been addressed, you should make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher in the first instance.
