Year 1

6th July 2020

Dear Year 1 (Download full letter here)

I am writing to you because things are a bit different at the moment which means that we are not able to do the sorts of things we would usually do in school.

When everyone is back in school in September you will be a Year 2 pupil!  Your classroom will be in Year 2 and you will come into school through the Year 2 door. One of the first things I will help you with is to find your table place. In Year 2, children sit by their table straight away; there is no need to sit on the carpet like you used to do in Year 1.

Lots of other things will be the same as they were in Year 1. We will have English and Maths lessons every morning as well as doing spellings and CLIC lessons. Some afternoons Mrs Shannon will be your teacher, which is great news as you already know her very well. Mrs Shannon will be teaching you subjects such as Computing, Music, Art, Design Technology, Geography and RE. I know that she is looking forward to spending some more time with you this year.

I am very excited about getting to know you all better and being able to help you learn lots of new and exciting things.

There are some things that you need to know about me before you become a Year 2 pupil. First of all, I want you to know that the most important thing for me is that you will always try your best. I will help you learn and make sure that you are given work which is right for you. I want you to be happy in Year 2 and I will plan lessons which I hope you will enjoy. I hope that you like the story of The Three Little Pigs because one of the first stories you will write in Year 2 will be based on that story. Being a good listener is really important, which I know that you already are, as Mrs Patterson has told me. Finally, a very important rule in Year 2 is to have fun!

Keep reading lots and working hard. I hope you have a lovely summer holiday and manage to have lots of exciting adventures before I see you in September. I can’t wait to hear all about them!

See you soon,

Mrs Roberts

Hello Year 1,

I’m really pleased that I will be teaching you all again in September. As Mrs Roberts has said, I will be planning lots of FUN activities for us to do in the afternoons.

Enjoy your holiday and let’s hope the sun shines.

I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Stay safe and see you soon.

Mrs Shannon

Dear Year 1 parents,

Welcome back everyone. I hope you had a lovely summer break. This letter is just to let you know what is happening this term and to remind you of some things which will continue as last year and also to give you details of some new things which happen in Year 1.

Just as in reception the children are entitled to a free piece of fruit/snack each day. However, if you prefer they can also bring in their own healthy snack or they can buy one at our tuck shop (no more than 30p per day is needed).  Please do provide you child with a water bottle each day containing water (no juice or fizzy drinks please). If your child has a packed lunch for dinner a separate water bottle is useful to keep in the classroom.

Please continue to read with your child on a regular basis; our reading books are situated on the shelf by the home corner. Please continue to write in your child’s reading record from last year. Any volunteers to come and listen to children read would be greatly appreciate; please let me know if you are able to help in this way.

Homework will include weekly spellings to learn will be handed out on a Friday and returned on or before the Wednesday after. I will send out a separate, more detailed letters with the first homework.

In Year 1 children will be awarded DoJo points, similar to our smiley faces in reception class. The children who have collected the most points during the week will be rewarded with ‘golden time’ on a Friday afternoon which the children love. Children receive points for many things including good listening, trying their best, being helpful, having good manners. The children would still like the opportunity to take ‘Bertie’ our visiting bear home for the weekend if they receive pupil of the week.

The children will be taking part in two P.E. lessons a week on a Tuesday and a Friday. Please make sure your child has their P.E. kit available for these days and could I ask you to check it is all labelled with your child’s name as it makes it much easier to return to the owner if it gets misplaced. Just a reminder earrings must be removed for P.E., we cannot take them out and all long hair needs to be tied back.

Mrs. Athersmith will again be covering PPA (planning, preparation and assessment time) on Tuesday afternoons. Mrs. Biggins will be working with us every morning and Mrs. Hopkins in the afternoon.

As you are aware each afternoon Year will be joined by ten members of Year 2 and our afternoon class has been named ‘Bowfell’. Please find attached a curriculum overview for Bowfell for 2018-2019.

Please do not hesitate to talk to me about any concerns you may have as your child enters Year 1, it is always better to sort things out before they become a major worry.

Lastly, may I take this opportunity to say that I am looking forward to continuing your child’s learning journey with them over the coming year.

Kind regards,

Miss Pritt

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Bowfell class. I am looking forward to teaching the afternoon class and teaching your children once again.  Mrs. Roberts and I will liaise closely to ensure that children are able to make links in their learning and achieve their potential.

I have enclosed a curriculum overview which will help you see many of the topics and subjects which we shall be covering this term. Please be assured that although the same topics/subjects will be taught to both year groups, the objectives and expectations will be different. All children will be given activities/work to do which is appropriate for their year group and ability.

As you can see on the curriculum overview, our topic in History this term will be The Gun Powder Plot and our Geography topic is Around the World.

Mrs. Athersmith will be in charge of the class on a Tuesday afternoon as this is my PPA time.

PE lessons will be on Friday afternoons for children in Bowfell class. Please make sure that your child has a full PE kit in school at all times and that any earrings/jewellery are removed on PE days.

Finally, if you have any questions, worries or concerns, or just want to have a chat about your child, please do let me know. I would rather know about any small niggles before they develop into anything bigger! Just phone the office to make an appointment.

Kind regards,

Miss Pritt
